"Why do we have to study English?" When students reluctant to this formidable question, how to react? How do you motivate really want to learn and use English? Here's an approach that has been used successfully.
Often when I give a speech or a Session university English teacher training session, I ask the audience, "How many countries have Spanish as their mother tongue?" As I live and work in South America believe that the response will be swift and future. Generally not. After the group sweated for a couple of minutes or so I ask: "Would you like to see the list?" They are, of course what I'm predicting the top 20 Spanish-speaking countries, namely:
or Spain
or Mexico
Honduras or
and Guatemala
or Nicaragua
or El Salvador
Costa Rica o
or Panama
or British
or Ecuador
or Peru
or Bolivia
or Chile
and Argentina
or Uruguay
and Paraguay
or the Dominican Republic
or Puerto Rico
and Cuba
Fun begins
Then the fun really begins. My next question is: "How many countries have English as their language maternal or official? To turn the screws a little more I can add, "You will all English teachers, so you need to know if the language is spoken, no? "They agree they should and for the next few minutes were devoted to the probe list L1 English. More squirming, some questions screamed and let the pressure off. "How do you have in your list?" It is rare that the number exceeds ten or fifteen years. Take a moment, how can you list?
Countries with English as L1 Official
"Do you see my list?" I asked. You know what the answer is unanimous. " Do you think this is something that could be useful for an English teacher to know? A "yes! "Below.
In In fact, there are at least thirty-five countries L1 English!
Surprised? Most English teachers are. And my current list might not even be "all inclusive "yet.
In any case, it's here:
or the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize
Barbados or Canada U.S. Virgin Islands
or Guyana, the British Virgin Islands, Australia
Or Malvinas Islands, England, Grenada
or St. Nevis and St. Kitts, Jamaica, India, Bermuda
or South Africa, Bahamas, New Zealand
Islands Cayman or St. Vincent, Grenadines
Or, Samoa, St. Lucia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone
