I think it was in the 70s.

Christine Chubbuck (August 24, 1944 – July 15, 1974) was a television news reporter who committed suicide U.S. during a live telecast on July 15, 1974. Born in Hudson, Ohio, Christine Chubbuck attended the Laurel School for girls in the neighborhood of Shaker Heights. He attended Miami University of Ohio for a year, specializing in performing arts, then attended Endicott Junior College in Beverly, Massachusetts, earned a degree in broadcasting from Boston University in 1965. She worked for WVIZ in Cleveland, Ohio during a year in 1966-67. He attended a summer workshop in radio and television at New York University in 1967. Also in 1967, worked for a few months for stations public television in Pittsburgh and Canton, Ohio. Chubbuck spent four years as a hospital computer operator in Sarasota and two years with a television company Sarasota cable. Immediately before joining WXLT, she in the traffic department WTOG in St. Petersburg, Florida. Several years of work before his death, had Chubbuck moved to the summer house of the family in Siesta Key, Florida – Washington Post would later report that his room painted canopy bed like a young teenager. After the divorce of the parents of Christine, her mother Peg and younger brother Greg came to live at home in Florida. When Greg left, her brother, Timothy moved in. She had a close relationship with his family, describing his mother and Greg as her closest friends. Chubbuck volunteered at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, giving performances puppet for children with developmental disabilities, and sometimes incorporate puppets at home in his talk show WXLT-TV. WXLT-TV owner Bob Nelson had Chubbuck initially hired as a reporter, but then gave him a talk show community affairs, "Suncoast Digest," which was developed in the morning after the national power PTL Club. Production Manager J. Gordon Acker describes Chubbuck's new show to a local newspaper: "The exhibition with local people and local activities. Give attention, for example, the store organizations dealing with alcoholics, drug addicts, and "other lost "segments of the community." Page five of the article showed a smiling Chubbuck posed with an ABC camera. Chubbuck took her position seriously, inviting local officials from Sarasota-Bradenton to discuss matters of interest to the growing beach community. After his death, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that Chubbuck had been nominated for a Forestry and Conservation Recognition awarded by the district office of the Forestry Division Bradenton Florida. He was considered a "strong" Mike Leach, forest district, which had been scheduled to appear as a guest on Ms. Chubbuck show the morning of his suicide, but there canceled due to the birth of their son. Chubbuck spoke with his family at length about his struggle with depression and suicide, but did not inform them of specific intent beforehand. She had been a drug overdose in 1970, and is often referred to the event. She had also been seeing a psychiatrist to several weeks before his death. Chubbuck mother decided to tell the station management of her daughter's suicidal tendencies because she feared he would be fired as a result it. His lack of relationships was generally considered that the impetus for her depression, her mother later found that "her suicide was simply because her personal life was not enough. "lamented that his coworkers 30th birthday was approaching and she remained a virgin who had never been in more two dates with a man. His brother Greg recalls several boyfriends she had before moving to Sarasota, while agreeing that he had problems with the connection office in the spa town. He attributes presents itself as "no date" to your current depressive self-loathing. Chubbuck had had her right ovary removed in an operation last year, and was told that if she was not pregnant in a year, is unlikely to ever be able to conceive. Chubbuck had corresponded a crushing colleague George Peter Ryan, baked him a cake for his birthday and requested his romantic attention, only to discover that he was involved with sports reporter Andrea Kirby. Kirby had been a co-worker closest to Chubbuck, but was offered a new job in Baltimore, which has depressed further Chubbuck. Chubbuck lack of a romantic partner was considered a tangent of her desperate need to have close friends, although colleagues said they tended to be brusque and defensive every time he made friendly gestures to her. She was self-deprecating, criticizing herself constantly and rejecting any compliments that gave him. She liked the word play and puns, three weeks before his suicide he had asked the station's news director if he could do a story about suicide. After obtaining his tone adopted visited the local sheriff's department to discuss with an officer methods of suicide. In the interview, an official said one of the most efficient was to use a .38 caliber revolver with bullets wadcutter target himself shot in the back of the head and not in the temple. A week before of her suicide she told Rob Smith, the night news editor, who had bought a gun and joked about death itself in the air. Smith later told The Washington Post that he had reprimanded her for the comment. On 12 July, had an argument with the news director Mike Simmons after cutting one of their stories to cover a shooting in place. Robert Nelson, the owner of the station, had tried to convince staff to concentrate on "blood and guts." The morning of 15 July Chubbuck confused co-workers, saying he had to read a newscast to open her program Suncoast Digest, something he had never done before. That morning talk show expected results in the studio while she sat at the news anchor desk. Her news copy actually contained a speculative report his impending suicide, wherein she conjectured that it would be declared dead eleven hours later. She placed a .38 revolver in the bag puppets and put it under your desk. During the first eight minutes of his program, Chubbuck covered three national news and then a restaurant in the area shot from the previous day. The restaurant was meat bottle in the restaurant from Sarasota-Bradenton Airport in the U.S. 41. The filmreel the restaurant shooting had jammed and would not be, so Christine shrugged and said: "According to Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in the blood and guts, in living color, you will see another first: an attempted suicide." He took revolver and shot herself behind her right ear. Christine fell forward violently and the technical director slowly faded to black. Cameraman Jean Reed later recalled that she thought she had been an elaborate hoax, and it was not until he saw Chubbuck contractions of the body being realized was genuine. The station quickly ran a standard Public Service tape and then a movie. Some viewers had called 9-1-1, while others called to the station to ask whether the shooting was staged. Chubbuck was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead 14 hours later. Upon receiving the news WXLT a staff member posted information to other stations using copy Chubbuck, as he left for that purpose. For a time, WXLT reruns of the series issued Ben TV soft rather than Chubbuck's program. Chubbuck was cremated. The funeral ceremony was held on the beach where her ashes were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 120 people attended, including local officials who had appeared on his program, and an assistant in a bikini. Three songs by Christine's favorite singer, Roberta Flack, were performed. Presbyterian minister Thomas Beason delivered the eulogy, stating that "We suffer at our sense of loss, we are afraid by anger, we are guilty in the face of her rejection, we are hurt by her choice of isolation and we are confused by your message. "The three national television channels informed of his death. Christine family brought an injunction against WXLT to prevent the release of the 2 "video tape of four of his suicide. Sarasota Department Sheriff's file lists a copy of the tape seized as evidence and later released to the family of Christine, along with their possessions.
