The New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council, AFL-CIO (Hotel Trades Council, for short), is the union of workers Hotels in New York. Our activists are 27,000 members of various ethnic and racial backgrounds and include many immigrants and women.
The unions are the organizations most important ongoing and the United States. Unlike many other nonprofit organizations, unions are controlled and funded entirely by the constituency they serve – the workers who comprise it.
Every day, unions are first line in the real struggle for democracy and justice.
The New York Hotel Trades Council was formed in late 1930 in a campaign to through the city to organize the hotel industry.
Until then, the hotel employees were among the workers the most exploited in New York. Working conditions were terrible. The treatment was unfair and humiliating. The benefits were nonexistent. Business hours were brutally long and pitifully low wages.
All previous attempts to organize, including a general strike New York hotel and restaurant workers in 1912, had been crushed by the owners of the hotel.
Our first agreement scale Industry was signed January 18, 1939 and included an unprecedented provision prohibits discrimination in employment. Hotel Trades Council and its local affiliates have already been at the forefront of the civil rights movement.
For over seventy years, our union has been a powerful force for social justice, progress and human rights, and improving the lives of hundreds of thousands Hotel workers and their families.
