If we wonder about a popular destination for our holidays in the Southern of Europe, Malaga may be a winner because the weather and prices. But before coming to this sun paradise and even more if we are going to rent a car or getting to our resort by ourselves, we may need to know how to get there from Malaga airport, which is very well situated among the major tourist resorts along the Costa del Sol, such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona, and not too far from the cities of Granada and Gibraltar, Cadiz and Seville. There is also an high speed train connection from Malaga to Madrid in less than 3 hours and Barcelona in less than 6 hours. This closeness is one of the main reasons, apart from the sun and good weather of course, the majority of tourists choose Malaga as their primary destination, and also car hire in Malaga in order to move freely within the city and its surroundings.

Car hire, transfer or public transport?

Depending on our travel needs we may consider the transport option which fits the best to our needs; Malaga train station is located in the city center, very close to the bus station, in the other hand the bus station links to many locations in Malaga province, Andalusia and Spain, however in high season may not be the most recommended option, even less if we consider comfort as one of our requeriments.

For those who like the use of the train, there are some bad news…the most distant locations such Estepona or Marbella to the West or Nerja to the East are not accessible by train, only by road, so our choices are reduced to three: Malaga airport transfers, public bus or car hire at Malaga airport. From Malaga airport leaves a direct shuttle bus to Marbella outside the arrivals lobby and a bus to Malaga. The drawback here is that out of season (October to June) the bus runs only every two hours and in summer every hour, getting quite crammed with people. At Malaga Airport you pay the driver direct; at Marbella Bus Station you buy a ticket from the ticket office.

If looking for taxis, as example for our transfer to Marbella or nearly areas you can expect to pay between 56 Euro (day time) and 66 Euro (night time); to Estepona the fare is 75 Euro (day time) and 85 (night time). These inconveniences and the fact that the drivers would not speak our language make more interesting the option of car hire at Malaga airport or to hire a Malaga airport transfer if we dont want to drive ourselves. The airport has direct access to the national road N-340 and the highway A-7, which both run along all the major resorts of the Costa del Sol and from Malaga airport to Marbella it takes about 40 minutes by car.

For those who decide to avoid the public transport, below are my two recommendations for transfers and for car hire at Malaga airport:

  • Car hire Malaga airport is the popular choice among tourists coming to Malaga who don’t want to spend much on taxis and public transport. There are many advantages on renting a car in Malaga and at very affordable prices.
  • Malaga airport transfers is another popular choice between the tourists coming with their family or just looking for comfort and relax on the Costa del Sol.
