What are stories from the news about backstabbing friends that could have lead to suicide?

I’m writing a definition essay about friendship. Is there any stories that were either on the news, or you know, that happened where somehow friends backstabbed another which lead to suicide or emotion problems? thanks.

I have a similar type of story on how a smile can make a difference:
Once there was a boy who was going through tough teen aged years. He was coming home from school with alot of books. He dropped them and another boy helped him pick them up, and smiled wishing him a good day. They bumped into each other a few times after and the boy smiled. They grew up in the same city, and started families there. The boy who dropped his books died younger 40s maybe, from cancer I believe. Anyways before he died he sent a letter to the boy who helped pick up his books when he was a teen. It had said that that day was the day he was going to commit suicide, he had the books because he didn’t want his rents to have to go back into the school after he died. Because this boy smiled at him he didn’t kill himself! He stayed alive for years and built a family because of this smile! Powerful story!

Who on newsnetworks decides what is “newsworthy” to present to the public? What is the definition of news?

This morning I watched 7 news clips; only one was of a positive nature. Who decides what will be news and why?
Thank you ellcdr!
Wonderful answers…thank you so much!
Wow Rajjpuut…I am impressed!

Congratulations, Josette, that is the most intelligent question I’ve seen anyone ask via Yahoo’s ASK website. I was the Academic Excellence Award Winner from my college journalism cadre and feel emminently qualified to answer.
OK, N E W S, is an acronym of north, east, west and south and supposedly indicates that news comes from all over. It also fits in with the idea of something ‘new’ and unfortunately that’s the aspect of things most emphasized.

News is, in many ways, a joke. It’s just entertainment content like fan magazines, porn websites, comic books, romance novels, comedy movies, etc.

On the other hand, news sometimes has the power to ennoble us, inform us and inspire us. It depends upon the news and it depends upon the recipient of the news — see below Apollo 13.

Unfortunately, the easiest news to gather is usually the least ennobling and the most negative. If you were to explore the nature of the simple glass of water that you drink and the story behind it, you would find one of the most incredible and most positive stories imaginable. For an example of a similar nature: I refer you to the awesome essay: “I, Pencil” referenced below. Unfortunately, in our democracy, we often degenerate to the level of the mass media which aims all entertainment at the level of a retarded 14 year old as witness our sitcoms and all the other trivial entertainment that passes for broadcast television. Why? Because, advertisers usually don’t want to risk missing anyone, any potential or eventually potential consumer out there. Because of that, higher class programming and higher class news are viewed as an exceptional risk. How many people watch the PBS MacNeil Leher Hour where serious news is explored in serious depth every night, perhaps 2%?

Easy news to a reporter in the field (almost always BAD news, rather than feature stories which are much more difficult to research and write and feature stories are almost always positive and ennobling) is always welcome and immediately channelled upward to the editors and proofreaders. They make decisions on what gets printed or aired by looking at A. Impact locally? B. Persons of Prominence involved? C. Sensational nature of the item? D. Is it NEW? E. Interesting? F. Exciting? G. Unusual? and only then is H. Is it of over-riding human interest? considered and since this is where the large majority of the complex and important and positive human news lies, this is the last and least important part of the so-called news. It all comes down ultimately to some editor’s choice of what will get him the most viewers. An incredible amount of murders, rapes, strikes, wars, hate crimes and other negative news is needed every day to sell soap, automobiles, perfume, lingerie, and houses.

One other aspect too serious and too deep to consider in this brief answer is that 95% of all journalism students consider themselves when asked either Democrats or liberals. So when you see people like Peter Jennings smirking or Mike Wallace ignoring tough questions he might ask Ted Kennedy or Lou Dobbs totally slanting every piece of news he touches, there is a valid reason in their minds for approaching news coverage that way; and a valid reason for you to doubt the overall truth of what you’re getting.

The movie Apollo 13 highlighted the attitude of journalists
toward real news and sensational news. Surely there are five million stories that could come out of the world of space exploration but in the movie they cancelled an educational broadcast from the pilot of Apollo 13 saying, “You’ve made space as exciting as a car wash” or something like that. What they were really saying is they were too lazy to get in there and do the hard work to make teaching people about the wonders of space exploration and instead expected it to come to them pre-packaged like some public relations release or infomercial. Notice that when disaster was imminent, how then the media became ghouls, vultures and annoying pests. The only reason the story of Apollo 13 was ennobling was because of the underlying nobility of the people involved and their courage and competence. The media was there actually hoping for a disaster because disasters sell more papers than happy endings do. I am ashamed of journalism.
