How much control does the gov’t have with the media?
Are they like separate entities and work independently of each other? Or maybe the government has some control over which the media chooses to publicize / announce?
I mean, how “free” are they (the media) to express their opinions of the government?
(By media, I mean: newspaper prints, magazines, television news programs, and stuff).
Is the media allowed to “criticise” the gov’t? Since it is often for “the public”, then it must also have stuff of the “public’s” opinions…
In The United States, In theory, the media is extremely free, as you can tell from the constant criticism of bush on most major news networks with the sole exception of fox news, and thats why you will see news channels and radio channels that espouse different opinions.
The government and the Media are two completely different entities. The only control the government has over the media is through the FCC and that only extends as far as the networks usign obscene language or having extreme nudity on channels that kids watch, but they cant censor the content of the media, what the media believes. In terms of newspaper the government used to be able to block the release of a paper if it was going to promote riots , but now it can only stop newspapers from being released if they fear imminent lawlessness or danger because of that. For example, the government cant stop a KKK newspaper from circulating if it says black people are dirty, but it can if it says Everyone go out in two days and kill all black people since that presents a threat of imminent lawlessness.
One thing to keep in mind though, in this age of partisanship, is that government officials have friends in the media corportations who will vie for their interests. For example Fox News is owned by Rupert Murdoch who is a close friend of George Bush and many republicans in congress, and as a result Fox news has an extrmely conservative right wing tilt to it, and will defend and promote every single bush action or decision.
But the Government cannot tell the media you cant criticize so and so. John Adams tried it under the Alien and Sedition act and it failed miserably and was removed from the law books because it was so socialistic. The media can criticize whoever it wants as long as it is based on factual information or it will be defamation in the form of either slander or libel. But if factual evidence are presented for say George bush’s failures in office, the media can criticize him as much as they want if the public will buy it. So if it takes criticizing the president or congressman to getgood media ratings, then by go you better believe the media will punnce on that person. It is the nature of the business
To sum it up they are two entities who work independently and together when needed, to advance their own interests.
